Happy New Year's Eve! Welcome to the 31st of December, 2023 show.

It’s the final day of Year 2023. You'll hear a small sampling of how the New Year was ushered in. 

I’ll share news of a proposal in 1896 to convert the calendar to thirteen months. 

A Riverside resident was feeling a bit jinxed in January, 1923. Why?

Greenwich Field Club, off Lake Avenue. 

One of Greenwich’s clubs celebrated with a masquerade dance, with many from town society present. 

A Russian Prime -with a date in New York Court. 

The Pickwick Arms Hotel. 

A Russian Prince visiting town -at the Pickwick Arms Hotel- was on trial in New York City for unpaid bills. 

From 1908.

I’ll have news of drunkenness and abusive language in 1908, as well as a protest of the then-Board of Selectman’s decision to authorize the shooting of unmuzzled dogs. 

Judge Hubbard. 

A century ago, the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce published its own New Year’s resolutions, while Judge Frederick Hubbard wrote about the history of the old Town Hall -not the one Robert Bruce donated to the Town on Greenwich Avenue.

It's Christmas! Welcome to the 25th of December, 2023 show.

On today's show, you'll get a sampling of how the Christmas holiday was observed and celebrated in Greenwich, Connecticut's history.

A group of a dozen newsboys in 1908 were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Green in Belle Haven. "They invited a dozen little newsboys of whom they knew to share their Christmas tree with them."

In Greenwich Life As It Is-And Was, local columnist Lucian Edwards wrote about the "Christmas Season" a century ago in 1923, focusing on the grocery firm Cohen Brothers, "which became one of the most democratic places of business in town, multimillionaires rubbing elbows with the humblest customers, and the courteous attention that each received..." 

In 1928, Ten Acres -where Cardinal Stadium and Greenwich High School are today -was opened to the public for ice-skating. 

 

Also in 1928, artist and author Whitman Bailey wrote about Christmas-Tide in the Eighties (1880s) at Indian Field, Greenwich, specifically at the Ephraim Mead house near Bruce Park. 

Saving is popular, reported the Greenwich News in 1914, citing the success of the Greenwich Trust Company's Christmas Club accounts.

 

Charles A. Moore of Round Hill did not let a thief of who stole prized chickens get in the way of looking after the wife and her five five children on Christmas. 

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 1910, the people of Greenwich learned that the town government accepted a generous gift from Mrs. Rebecca Witherell -the widow of the late Nathaniel Witherell- comprising The Nathaniel Witherell Memorial Pavilion.

On Greenwich Life: As It Is-And Was Lucian Edwards wrote about the interesting history of town’s stone quarries. 

We’ll introduce you to Whitman Bailey, a sketch artist who -starting in 1924- also wrote published commentaries about area local historic sites for thirty years. On today’s show you’ll hear Bailey’s comments about the circa 1792 Zophar Mead House at Field Point Park.

History is replete with wrongdoings and misdeeds -and you’ll hear about those on Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Welcome to the 12th of December 2023 show. 

On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, in 1925, wedding bells rang at Christ Episcopal Church (Christ Church Greenwich) when Isabel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Rockefeller, and Frederick W. Lincoln, Jr., exchanged vows. 

On Greenwich Life As It Is-And Was, Erwin Edwards concluded a two-part story in 1919 about Greenwich's oldest village, Sound Beach -today's Old Greenwich.
