Welcome to the 15th of August 2023 show.

On Greenwich in the Gilded Ageour visit will take us to Seven Gables in Belle Haven. Built in 1891 at 1 Harbor Drive. Its principal owner was Edward N. Norton, "a golf and yachting aficionado who in 1892 built a magical, dark stained, shingled, English cottage...with seven acutely peaked gables, facing towards various points of the compass."

Our journey is made possible on today's show by Victorian Summer: The Historic Houses of Belle Haven Park, Greenwich, Connecticut by Matt Bernard.

It is available for purchase at the Greenwich Historical Society's Museum Store, or copies may be borrowed through the Greenwich Library. It is richly illustrated, revealing a wealth of detailed history. I strongly recommend it.

On Greenwich Before 2000 we'll look back at 1945-1946.

We continue to observe the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Greenwich Police Department on Crimes and Misdemeanors

Welcome to the 22nd of August 2023 show.

It was one-hundred years ago when the people of Greenwich learned that the original Stanwich Congregational Church burned to the ground. This was major news in Greenwich in August, 1923.

"During the heavy electrical storm which broke here early Wednesday morning," the Greenwich News and Graphic reported on Friday, August 24, "the Stanwich Congregational Church, one of the oldest edifices in this locality was struck by lightning and was burned to the ground."

"Another old landmark is gone," said an editorial that same day.

Judge Frederick A. Hubbard reported that "there has been some discussion as to whether a well-constructed lightning rod might not have prevented the casualty."

On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, we'll pay a visit to Sunridge Farm, located at 534 Riversville Road in North Greenwich -made possible on today's show thanks to The Great Estates Greenwich, Connecticut 1880-1929 by The Junior League of Greenwich.

On Greenwich Life As It is-And Was, Lucien B. Edwards wrote a century ago in August, 1923 that the "problem of increased accommodations for public school children is one of the important, if not the most important matters in which the majority of the residents of Greenwich are interested at the present time." It is conversation still occurring in 21st century Greenwich.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

Please Help: Recommended Maui Relief Organizations

Credit: Maui News

As many of you who have followed me through the years, I've been going back and forth between my home in Greenwich, Connecticut and to Honolulu, Hawaii.

I just returned to Honolulu on Tuesday, August 15 to resume my teaching and lecturing on August 21 with the International Programs at Kapiolani Community College of the University of Hawaii System.

Our program was interrupted due to the pandemic when I last taught here in September, 2019.

Recent news about Hawaii has been dominated by the catastrophic wildfires that engulfed the Island of Maui -especially the destruction of Lahaina, the one-time port and capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

While here, I have been doing my part to assist with relief efforts.

With the help and cooperation of my ohana here in Hawaii, I've listed for you the following non-profits that welcome financial assistance.

Your financial donations to these organizations all help direct immediate financial aid where it is needed:

There aren't adequate words to describe the devastation on Maui -including the loss of life. All Hawaii mourns.

If you have further questions for me, please contact me by email at greenwichatownforallseasons@gmail.com

Aloha, and with gratitude,

Jeffrey Bingham Mead

We are pleased to promote Michael Helupka Tree Service, LLC here in Greenwich. I was impressed and a satisfied customer -and you will be, too. Call 203.622.8737.

Welcome to the 8th of August 2023 show.

On Greenwich in the Gilded Ageour visit will take us to Greyhurst -later, Willowstone- in Belle Haven. Built in 1889 at 221 Otter Rock Drive, Greyhurst was demolished and replaced with Willowstone -"a mediterranean villa comparable to the Breakers in Newport, but on a smaller scale" in 1916.

Its principal owners were Frank Morgan Freeman and Russel Cowles.

On Greenwich Life As It Is-And Was, you'll learn about the development of Belle Haven, and be introduced to the men behind this Gilded Age community.

In 1906, the Greenwich Police Department was founded. We're pleased to take our listeners back in time on Crimes and Misdemeanors, a segment of the show chronicling crime and law enforcement.

On Greenwich Before 2000, we'll learn what happen in the Town of Greenwich in the years 1692 tru 1697.

In other historical happenings, called the event of the season, the annual ball at the Riverside Yacht Club in 1893. "These mid-summer balls have become a recognized feature of the summer life at Greenwich." In mid-August, 1901, the first trolley car entered Greenwich from Port Chester. In July, 1929, Judge Frederick A. Hubbard announced in his column, The Judge's Corner, that the widening of Greenwich Avenue was not a dead issue, apparently much to the relief of town residents.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.
