Welcome to the 1st of August 2023 show. Summer has flown by fast, has it not? Many are on summer vacations. We wish you safe journeys wherever you may be.

On Greenwich in the Gilded Ageour visit will take us to Jack's Island at 56 Harbor Drive in Belle Haven Park. "The most dramatic piece of land in Belle Haven, many would say, is Jack's Island, an anvil-shaped expanse of green jutting into Long Island Sound where it intersects with Byram Harbor." Built in 1889, its principal owner was John Barrett. Our journey is made possible on today's show by Victorian Summer: The Historic Houses of Belle Haven Park, Greenwich, Connecticut by Matt Bernard.

It is available for purchase at the Greenwich Historical Society's Museum Store, or copies may be borrowed through the Greenwich Library. It is richly illustrated, revealing a wealth of detailed history. I strongly recommend it.

On Greenwich Life As It is-And Was, Lucien B. Edwards wrote a century ago about the Havemeyer School building off Greenwich Avenue, "no one thought that in thirty years it would be in what may be said the center of such a congested business district that the removal of the school to a new site would be thought necessary."

On Greenwich Before 2000 we'll look back at 1809-1815.

We continue to observe the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Greenwich Police Department on Crimes and Misdemeanors

In other historical news, the citizens of Cos Cob were engrossed with the question of where the truck house of the newly-organized Cos Cob Fire Company be located. Fire destroyed the 'Greenwich,' a ferryboat owned by the Wenck Corporation at its dock off Steamboat Road. The people of Greenwich learned of what others had to say about them in 1881. 'Greenwich at Play' in 1921 revealed a description of society life, and more!

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

You’ve come to the right place to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, one of America's most interesting and extraordinary communities.

We’ll have all this -and more- as our history continues to unfold.
