Welcome to the 22nd of August 2023 show.

It was one-hundred years ago when the people of Greenwich learned that the original Stanwich Congregational Church burned to the ground. This was major news in Greenwich in August, 1923.

"During the heavy electrical storm which broke here early Wednesday morning," the Greenwich News and Graphic reported on Friday, August 24, "the Stanwich Congregational Church, one of the oldest edifices in this locality was struck by lightning and was burned to the ground."

"Another old landmark is gone," said an editorial that same day.

Judge Frederick A. Hubbard reported that "there has been some discussion as to whether a well-constructed lightning rod might not have prevented the casualty."

On Greenwich in the Gilded Age, we'll pay a visit to Sunridge Farm, located at 534 Riversville Road in North Greenwich -made possible on today's show thanks to The Great Estates Greenwich, Connecticut 1880-1929 by The Junior League of Greenwich.

On Greenwich Life As It is-And Was, Lucien B. Edwards wrote a century ago in August, 1923 that the "problem of increased accommodations for public school children is one of the important, if not the most important matters in which the majority of the residents of Greenwich are interested at the present time." It is conversation still occurring in 21st century Greenwich.

There’s lots to see, to do, and to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich.

You’ve come to the right place to learn about the history of the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, one of America's most interesting and extraordinary communities.

We’ll have all this -and more- as our history continues to unfold.
