Public Service Announcement: Hypertension

It was three years ago this week that I experienced a health-related condition that changed things.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is all too common; it can be serious if not treated. Despite years of regular exercise, diet and hydration I started to experience breathing difficulties. That was very unusual.

At first, I thought it was pollen allergies. That year, like this past Spring 2025, we were inundated with heavy amounts of pollen. I thought my symptoms would simply subside. I was experiencing this recently, too.

Two neighbors noted this. One dropped me off at the local hospital's emergency room. An examination turned into immediate admittance. It was the first time I'd been in a hospital since I was 7 years old.

While my hospital stay was far from ideal -and I'll likely never seek medical attention there again- it caused me to make some better choices and embrace healthier habits.

Thanks for my ohana in Hawaii, I've designed my own recovery plan. It has worked extraordinarily well. I've eliminated salt and overly processed foods, increased my exercise and learned to redevelop myself on the inside.

I've fully embraced 'Make America Healthy Again' with a career move towards farming and agriculture very much in mind -though I'm not giving up my academic work by any means.

Hypertension and things like badly-named congestive heart failure are treatable, especially when caught early. When I am in Greenwich, many of you might see me doing my near-daily-6-8-mile hikes around town. Our farmers have been a godsend and deserve to have our business and be supported. Thank you!

One of the tasks I had to do was eliminate certain people from being in my life. It's simple: if you stress me, offend me, disappoint me you can't be in my life. That's literally doctor's orders. Don't change your habits for my sake. Get on with your life, and from a distance I can wish you well.

I urge any of you anywhere to get tested for this "silent killer." Take charge of your health. Lose the excess weight and work hard to keep it off. My quality of life has substantially improved. Yours can, too.
