September 12, 1908 was a carnival-like gala day for Greenwich "autoists" who paraded around town in their automobiles. Mrs. Seton shared details of her world travels at the first-ever open meeting of the Woman's Club in 1924. A Greenwich philanthropist offered to donate a public children's playground behind the Havemeyer School in 1911. The Cos Cob Inn changed hands, too. We'll have Crimes and Misdemeanors -our historical crimes report- announcements and more as our history continues to unfold.

In October, 2024 I enjoyed -and I mean I really enjoyed- one of the most fun-filled conversations about one of Greenwich's most beloved families and institutions -Freccia Brothers Garage.

When we met at Coffee for Good in the Solomon Mead House at 48 Maple Avenue that autumn morning, the Freccia family did more to educate me -and entertain me- about their place in Greenwich, Connecticut's nearly four centuries of history.

With over 103 years of history under their belts I also learned something else about the Freccia's: They are a hardworking, tenacious and fearless bunch.

And we are the better for it.

Flash forward to less than a year into the future to a set of circumstances that none of us foresaw. We were all caught off-guard in the worst possible way.

As reported in various media outlets, a legal battle and family dispute over ownership of the building has resulted in the business' eviction, and now the community is rallying to help Freccia Brothers Garage find a new home.

"Despite being hopeful that it would work out, unfortunately we’ve just learned that we lost the dispute and the family member who won has decided to immediately evict us," the description says.

"Every dollar you contribute goes toward helping us recover — critical expenses, securing a new space, stabilizing our future, and preserving what’s left of a century-old institution that should have never been taken away," the description adds.

In a letter posted to Facebook by Freccia Brothers Garage, Guinevere Freccia reiterated the business did not fail - it was "forced out."

"After 103 years of business, we were evicted by our landlord—Frank’s mother, my grandmother. All but one of Skip’s children are rallying to keep the shop open," wrote Guinevere. She noted the Freccias don't want to leave the building, but they "will respect the law."
