On Greenwich Life As It Is-And Was, Erwin Edwards shared the news of the Year 1919 bell in the steeple of the Second Congregational Church presented on Easter Sunday by Charles N. Mead -and previous bells, too. 




Greenwich's Police Department was founded in 1906. History is replete with wrongdoings and misdeeds, which will be shared on Crime and Misdemeanors. On today's show? Highway robbery in Glenville.

Welcome to the 16th of January, 2024 show.


In 1903 -long before Edward C. Potter’s statue of Col. Raynal C. Bolling was installed in front of the Havemeyer School Building, the people of Greenwich were introduced to the famous sculptor’s studio off North Street.


In neighboring Port Chester in 1913, Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, delivered a lecture under the auspices of the Port Chester Woman’s Club, with many from Greenwich attending.

On Greenwich Life As It Is-And Was, Lucien B. Edwards wrote in 1924 about the town’s dwindling number of tidal mills. 


In 1880, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant appeared in Stamford, with Civil War veterans from both Stamford and Greenwich serving as an honor guard.


In 1919, a protest and petition was formulated against the showing of movies on Sundays. 


At a wedding in Glenville in 1911, the bride, Miss Mary Tvbjk married John Chevinz. She was presented with “about $40, with which to start a housekeeping, each male guest presented who danced with her paying $1 for the privilege.” Not a bad way to finance a new business. 



In 1928, Vito Dalto of South Water Street in Byram (formerly East Port Chester) was getting his haircut in the Sokol Barber Shop on Mill Street where be became ill -and died on his way to United Hospital in Port Chester.

Col. Raynal C. Bolling's statue in front of the

'Bolling Statue A Work of Art' proclaimed the Greenwich News and Graphic on November 19, 1920. "It was about a year ago that E.C. otter, the noted sculptor, of Greenwich, began the work on a statue of the late Col. Raynal C. Bolling, one of the first prominent American victims of the world war, who was killed by a German bullet while performing a valiant service for his country." 


Bolling is also known in Greenwich for Greyledge, one of the town's "Great Estates."




A century ago, in January, 1924, Lucian P. Edwards published a piece in his column, Greenwich Life As It Is-And Was on Greenwich's private schools.

In August, 1916, the people of Greenwich learned, "the torpedo boat destroyer Sampson, one of the newest craft in the United States Navy, was anchored in Greenwich Harbor over the weekend, and hundreds of persons took advantage of the opportunity to inspect one of the units in Uncle Sam's great fleet of sea fighters." Sailors donned in USN uniforms were much in evidence on the streets of Greenwich, while officers were entertained at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club




Sketch artist and author Whitman Bailey introduced his readers to Judge George W. Brush and Joseph E.B. Brush, Characters About Town in Days Gone By.
