In April, 1924, Faircroft -one of the 'Great Estates' in Northern Greenwich was destroyed by fire. It was reconstructed in 1925. It went on to be the home of Claire Booth Luce, Tudor Investment Corporation, and now serves as Brunswick School's middle school campus.

A pianist in Larry Siry's Orchestra at the Pickwick Arms Hotel found "a small flask of whiskey wrapped in a copy of the New York Evening Post, bearing date of Aril 20, 1898" in a carefully stowed piano in the hotel -making front-page news in 1925.

What happened in Greenwich in Year 1958? We'll have the details.

It was May, 1882 -and already Greenwich Realtor Charles Cameron, "has been kept busy with people looking for houses for the summer months, and from present appearances probably all places offering for rent will be taken."

Greenwich Observer, August, 1881.

As early as 1881 people were fast to regard the Town of Greenwich as an ideal summer destination. It was not hard to see why.

Imagine it's January, 1908 -let's remind ourselves how cold it is. A group of young Greenwich men participated in a "walking match" to see who could walk the fastest from the top of Greenwich Avenue to Stamford's Town Hall. Yes, a prize was offered! Who won, and in how much time?

Newman's Hotel at Mianus Landing, circa 1901.

At Mianus Landing -where Valley Road and Palmers Hill Road meet today- Newman's Hotel was a landmark between Greenwich and Stamford. In 1912 its closing was announced. Sheriff Newman kept it as a hotel since 1855. It was purportedly built in 1790 by Peter and Robert Jessup.

Greenwich's Police Department was founded in 1906. History is replete with wrongdoings and misdeeds on Crimes and Misdemeanors.

In 1908, a "Grand Auto Carnival" was announced to the people of Greenwich. Hundreds of decorated cars were expected to parade over the most beautiful sections of the town.

On Crimes and Misdemeanors, in May, 1925, for the first time in the town's history "a young woman bootlegger" was charged with transporting liquor without a license.
